Babson reports coal abundance after 1923 disruption
Wellesley Hills Mass October 18 statistician Roger W Babson released a survey on the coal situation. He notes that after the 1922 bituminous strike output from April to August stayed at a minimum, leaving last year’s production the smallest in twelve years with low stocks and strained transportation leading to high coal prices in fall and early winter.

Excessive Production Hits Soft Coal Markets in 1922 Review
The article notes October 1922 coal prices at $4.40 per ton, with production near record levels. Through 230 working days, output reached 413,435,000 tons, higher than last year and surpassing most of 1922. Stocks jumped to 56,000,000 tons, and prices at mines fell to about $2.40. It urges caution on coal stocks and bonds, arguing the sector faces overproduction, rising costs, and limited credit appeal while favoring utilities tied to coal use.
