London October 12 The British Parliament opened with plans to address the coal miners strike that halted Great Britain's coal industry. Labour leaders and miners federation officials met with lawmakers to seek a settlement as rioting and unemployment fears rise, with Prime Minister Chamberlain promising action and a committee to study operations.
The rumor that Women’s Christian Temperance Unions favored Harding for president or Donahue for governor is denied by officials. The union’s president says no congress or state action was taken, stressing focus on referendums and the Crabbe Act rather than any candidate.
Secretary Meredith told the American Bankers Association convention that shrinking farm product values this season will leave farmers about 2.106 billion dollars poorer than 1919 price levels. He warned that lower prices, reduced credit, and higher costs squeeze production and that bankers must support cooperative farming and adequate prices to ensure national food needs are met.
Patrolman Crehan arrested Matt Bryant at Jackson hotel last night and Treis charged with grand larceny. It is alleged he stole two palomosite ores from Dr Shatfield's barn, belonging to Clint Worthington. A quantity of teals was taken. Tires were found on an automobile belonging to Bryant, and the arrest followed.
On Wednesday at 6 30 p m the Rotary club will host a joint meeting with the Kiwanis club at the M C A gymnasium. Great preparations are made for the greatest meeting of the year with dinner music short talks and several secret items. A large attendance is expected from both clubs.
Ten days ago police fled by a green line conductor as two colored men were picked up at night by him near Oberlin and Wellington. They were arrested on felon charges and held a day or more before release after a forged claim. One man admitted the ruse. the other worked to prove their innocence. The men insisted they sought only honest work and not whisky or crime, appealing for open doors and fair treatment.
A Senate committee ordered complete records of campaign contributions and disbursements from both major parties. It instructed chairmen to file detailed lists of subscriptions over $200, itemized expenditures, and a full audit. The panel also deferred senatorial campaign investigations until after the election and discussed enforcement actions related to the Logan Act.
The city council met for over two hours handling several minor items. A claim for loss by a resident due to a water shutoff was discussed. A plumbing inspector position was debated alongside sanitary policy. Barrett may erect a large block on East Broad Street. A 6 inch culvert is approved for the lake Short Rubber Co area. George V Hampton of the Farmers National Council urged a 250 million dollar loan to aid farmers. He said he wrote to President Wilson seeking cooperation and cited providing 5 percent treasury rate for financing.
Owing to gas shutoffs at noon on five days weekly for the next three weeks the Chronicle-Telegram will close its news forms at 11 in the morning. The paper may convert to a morning publication during the period as gas-company work proceeds.
A government report shows United States building output trailing England in gross tonnage by 1,969,000 tons for the year ending September 30, despite continuing to produce more ships than any other country. The report adds total world tonnage remains greater overall due to Britain.
Oct 19 The French foreign office said it had not received any request from Washington for information linked to President Wilsons letter to Senator Harding. No official French communication has been made about a substitute for the league of nations.
Governor James M. Cox spoke briefly from the logs platform as his train paused in Springfield on the way east. A crowd of several hundred gathered and Cox answered an assistant call. A separate report from Port Clinton notes 10 year old Mike Lugka of Marblehead was killed instantly after being struck by a traction car while playing near the tracks.
Attorneys opened in the Walter Davies case with defense contending innocence. Davies aided officers in book examination, while prosecutors prepared to present evidence. prosecution and defense plans outlined, with a jury charge to follow as the case proceeds.
Every colored man and woman in the city is urged to attend this evening at the Second M E church on Middle avenue and 17th street to hear Prof J B Bellis a noted educator and prominent race leader editor of the Douglas Times founder and principal of Douglas High and Industrial Training School The address will be free of charge and is presented under the auspices of the Colored Republican club of this city.
Coroner Garver viewed the body of Joe Matolewicz of 22 15th Street after finding him near the Elyrin Tron and Steel Co plant at the Welsh undertaking parlors. An autopsy concluded death from exposure and alcoholism. Funeral services are set for tomorrow morning.
Cleveland police report a Lake sailor shot and killed in Conneaut by Patrolman Charles Murphy who says he was attacked by Cheske and John Rost during an attempted arrest. Rost is held on interfering with an officer. a sister at 1265 West 25th Street could not be located.
A street car on The Yellow Line struck a horse just outside Elyria city limits at 1h 80 last evening. Superintendent Cohn notified police who contacted the sheriff and Dr Ambstetter, who killed the suffering animal.
Athens bulletin reports King Alexander's condition remained unchanged after monkey bite infection. Physicians note persistent drowsiness and ongoing treatment as of early morning. Affected monarch under careful observation at the capital hospital.
Republican candidate Harry L. Davis leads a campaign caravan with C. L. Knight of Akron and a prowoman speaker. They begin at 9 a.m. from Square, visiting Gratton, LaGrange, Wellington, Brigh ton, Kipton, Oberlin, South Amherst, and return to Elyria for a 7:30 p.m. address in Public Park. Forty five decorated autos and the Spirit of 76 drum corps accompany the tour. Citizens are urged to attend in their machines. A Lorain mass meeting is also planned after the Elyria stop.
In Akron a public square speech features Fred Ormsby and Paul Tarssell defending J. L. Knight against congressman Matlin L. Davey. They cite Knight’s wartime service, draft board role, and Red Cross work, while criticizing Davey for wartime stance and enlistment delay. Ex-service men advocate Knight as honest loyal and brainy.
CG W Tarr reports progress on the new waterworks improvement. About 15 000 feet or nearly two and a half miles of the main have been laid with roughly a mile remaining. The pumping station to Leavitt road line tested at 150 pounds pressure and found satisfactory. Excavation for the filter plant has begun and the coagulating basin will be built first as the most needed.
Chicago October 19 Giier or Py Ten Garrity called department heads to a meeting to disclose findings in a liquor investigation. He claimed affidavits show captains assigning detectives to guard whiskey shipments and that investigators have affidavits from policemen and others implicating whole stations.
A petition in error filed by Anna Wallace Hoge against the City of Etyria appeals an appropriation dispute from probate court. Grounds allege trial errors including jury instructions and verdict signing, as the case concerns the appropriation of hind on the lake front for enlarging the water works pumping station.
The council debated funding for street cleaning, noting last year’s $6400 spend and $6598 appropriated this year. Auditor estimates require about $2500 to finish by January 1.
