In Manhattan predawn chase, Rap Brown and three accomplices rob a bar on the Upper West Side. Brown wounded, two officers injured. captured on a rooftop after a gun battle. Police say Brown and others to be charged with attempted murder and robbery.

Drafted in error he finally gets shipped home
Clyde Fitch, a 24 year old from Beauty Kentucky, was drafted to Vietnam by mistake due to a misread draft number. After an audit revealed the error in June 1971 he was discharged and returned home with his wife and infant daughter. He sought discharge and later was released in California, reuniting with his family in Kentucky.

Random motor vehicle inspections aim to keep cars safe
The Ohio Highway Patrol began random motor vehicle inspections on January 1 1968. Patrolman Ladd Carpenter and a civilian inspector stop 115 to 120 cars daily in Lorain and Medina counties, checking 13 items per vehicle and issuing repair notices or towing for major violations. Most motorists cooperate, with women drivers often amused by being stopped.
