Avon Man Escapes Severe Injury in Trench Collapse

Avon resident Jim Wearsch was pinned under a 10 inch water pipe after a trench cave in on Detroit Road near French Creek. He escaped serious injury. x rays showed no broken bones though ankles are swollen and legs bruised. Traffic was briefly halted to prevent further cave ins.

Boston ship disaster seals waterfront tragedy

Naval officers said there was nothing aboard the vessel undergoing refitting to account for the disaster as smoke and fumes spread rapidly. Captain Thomas Ahroon of Norfolk fled his cabin through a hatchway to escape suffocation while sailors and civilians below decks perished by flame and blast. Some may have drowned when the sprinkler system released water. This marked Boston's worst waterfront disaster and the Navy's deadliest peace time tragedy since the Hobson loss in 1952.

Ike Says Trade With Allies Vital

President Eisenhower urged strong trade with allies to secure raw materials and bolster the free world economy. He spoke in New Orleans during the Louisiana Purchase anniversary events and later addressed cattlemen in Kansas City, stressing national welfare and drought relief for ranchers. He did not reference tariff policy.

Lorain Sheriff Leads Raid on Paradise Club

Sheriff Carl R. Finegan ordered a raid on the Paradise Club on Elyria Avenue outside Lorain after reports of fights and gunfire. Deputies and Lorain officers searched patrons finding ten knives and ten open whiskey bottles. no arrests made but charges to follow.

Awards Program At New Red Cross Offices In Elyria

A public open house drew a large crowd to the Elyria Chapter American Red Cross as officials, volunteers, and residents inspected the new Chapter House. David Hyman praised the facility as a long dream fulfilled and noted active Red Cross groups countywide. Certificates were awarded for Canteen Service and Social Welfare Aid courses during a two to four o clock session, with Mrs. A. T. Sibley presenting canteen certificates.

Man Declared Sane After Fatal Stabbing Charge

Pedro Leiva of Lorain was charged with first degree murder for the July 29 stabbing of Juan Marques on 29th Street in Lorain. After a 30 day lunatic asylum examination at Lima State Institution, Dr. R. E. Bushong reported Leiva is legally sane though subnormal mentally, and thus subject to court disposition. Leiva claimed intoxication at the time. police say the victim was robbed.

Elyria Democrats Cancel Lights On Fund Solicitation

The Elyria Democratic Central Committee cancels a planned Monday evening fund drive. They state the Community Chest campaign opens that day and the Lights On idea could interfere with or be misunderstood alongside polio fund campaigns. Leading Democrats prefer not to risk confusion with the Community Chest.
