Tropical Storm Nicholas Gains Strength Offshore

Tropical Storm Nicholas strengthened to 50 mph with a 10 mph rise and eyed possible hurricane status by Friday. Located about 1,010 miles east of the Windward Islands, it moves west-northwest at 8 mph with a northwest turn expected, the National Hurricane Center said. It is the 14th named storm of the Atlantic season running June 1 to Nov 30.
