Wellington residents object to 36-unit disability plan

About 60 Wellington residents urged the village council to file a state objection to nine family homes on Forest and Court Streets for 36 developmentally disabled individuals. They said 36 is more than their share and criticized Adelbert Weber for not informing locals before filing for a license.

UAW Local 1250 at Ford Brook Park Eyes Friday Walkout

The Ford Motor Co Brook Park plant faced a possible strike by 10,000 UAW Local 1250 members if no agreement is reached by Friday. Thurman Payne said he notified the company of strike intent amid disputes over paid relief time and other concessions. About 3,000 workers are already laid off.

Imperial Valley Quake Damages In The Millions

A major quake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck Southern California’s Imperial Valley causing millions in damage but no deaths. Buildings cracked, walls buckled, gas lines ruptured, and fires broke out in Calexico Brawley and El Centro as residents slept outdoors amid aftershocks. The All-American Canal was damaged raising flood fears while a gasoline tank ruptured and spilled 25 to 50 gallons per minute. Red Cross reports 40 to 100 injured, with about 30 in Mexico. only three hospitalized. The quake was the strongest on the US mainland in over eight years.

Man dies after front end loader overturns at plant

Frederick Hull 26, of Elyria, was killed when a front end loader toppled at Wallace Fees Poured Walls plant on Center Ridge Rd. Police say a wheel slipped from a ramp as he unloaded sand. Hull, a Vietnam veteran from Iowa, died en route to Elyria Memorial Hospital. He leaves a wife and two children. Funeral arrangements in Creston, Iowa, and local services planned in North Ridgeville.

Nationwide oil boycott urged by area unions Thursday

Area union officials say they back a nationwide protest to oppose the "big oil ripoff" as unions including IAMAW and UAW urge members to participate. They warn deregulation will raise petroleum costs, with a Cleveland rally planned at Sohio headquarters and ads to prompt local action.
