Lorain teachers return as board OKs pact unanimously

Lorain teachers left picket signs and returned to classes as the school board unanimously approved a three year contract. 466 of 726 union members voted 239 to 227 approving the pact after a six week delay. Beginning salary rises to 11,400 with dental, 11,700 with vision in 1980 and 12,400 in 1981.

Amherst Police Chief Faults Council Over Pay and Morale

South Amherst faces a strained police setup with only two part time officers left though six could be hired. Chief Thomas Snizek cites low pay and council actions as harassment, leading to missed calls and delayed responses amid ongoing efforts for “cooperation and compromise.”

Florida caucus up in air for Ted and Jimmy

In Miami, 4000 plus Dade County Democratic ballots were tabulated to gauge 1980 support. The county delegates chosen on November 18 could tilt toward Carter or Kennedy, with both campaigns claiming victory as results rolled in. White House press secretary Powell predicted a Carter majority of delegates. Kennedy partisans forecast a popular vote edge.

Nobel prize entry boosts Weinberg on a shave

Harvard physicist Steven Weinberg confirmed as co winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in physics along with Sheldon Glashow and Abdus Salam. The trio earned the award for their theory unifying weak and electromagnetic forces and predicting the weak neutral current.
