The Shanghai battle, entering a temporary lull after a furious Chinese offensive, causes damage near one billion dollars and halts 80 percent of air trade while 90 percent of workers are thrown out of employment. Refugee camps report Chinese children dying weekly from milk shortages amid the siege.
CG Herbert Schinzel of Toledo Ohio conducted the installation of officers for Lorain County Voiture No 149 at Spring Valley Country Club Elyria last evening. Sixty people attended the event which included a clam bake and informal dance. R F Leemhuis received a trophy won by the Ohio Grand Voiture for the largest and most comprehensive Child Welfare program and is now treasurer of the Grand Voiture of Ohio. The local Voiture earned permanent possession of the trophy after winning at the State Convention in Columbus for three consecutive years.
Fair, not so cold tonight in west and south portions. Saturday partly cloudy with rising temperatures. High pressure centered over the Lake region extends east of the Rockies while pressure falls over the Rocky Mountain Plateau. Temperatures remain unusually low in the Ohio Valley and have fallen in the Gulf and South Atlantic states with frost reaching Shreveport and Vicksburg. Warmer in the Plains and lower lake regions. Rain has started in the plateau region. elsewhere, generally fair.
Indianapolis reports James Dalhover, survivor of the Brady gang machine gun killings, facets in a cell how he and Clarence Shaffer Jr threatened to kill leader Al Brady if he kept public attention. The trio planned a night club and skating rink in Baltimore while Brady sought headlines. Dalhover jailed on bank robbery charges as prosecutors weigh which murder case offers best path to the electric chair, with motions and witnesses shaping the Mack case against Minneman.
Franklin Peterman seven year old son of Mr and Mrs P A Peterman of 112 Fourth Street was injured in a traffic accident in front of his home Wednesday. He suffered a fractured right leg and a fractured skull when struck by an automobile at noon while crossing the street. He was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital where his condition was reported as still serious.
Three people were injured in separate traffic accidents reported to police and sheriff deputies. Edward Barbknecht, 18, from Sumner Street, was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital after a 6 55 p m collision with a car driven by Kenneth Wettring of Harvard Avenue. Anna Bender, 42, from West Avenue, sustained lip lacerations and minor head and chest injuries in a collision involving Mary Whitworth and Anna Fisher at North Ridge road and Elyria Avenue. Whitworth also had minor wrist and foot injuries. A third crash on Route 58, about 1 1/2 miles north of Oberlin, involved Clifford Wynn of Lorain and Lewis Grady of Sheffield with minor vehicle damage.
Charles Q Parker age 52 from Berlin Heights is hired as fireman for the Grafton School for the 1937 88 year. He holds a first class engineers license and has 15 years experience. John L Good remains as substitute until October 25 when Parker starts. Mole, long custodian and fireman for 16 years, loses position due to lacking an engineers license and will become pension eligible next year.
County agricultural extension agent T. Hummel will spend most of next week in Columbus for the annual conference of Ohio agricultural extension and home extension agents at Ohio State University. The event opens Tuesday and runs through Friday with several prominent speakers scheduled.
Elyria's Company B plans a November 6 banquet at the ElksRestaurant to mark a second wartime reunion since wartime days will relive memories with former members aiming for 100 plus attendees. The unit, originally Company B 145th Infantry 37th Division, formed before 1910 as a National Guard company, sent 160 Elyria men to war rising to 230 with transfers. They trained at Camp Sheridan Alabama and crossed to France aboard the Leviathan with Major Ror E. Hultz leading the company.
Harrison W. Jewell of Delaware was elected chairman of the reorganized Ohio parole board at its first meeting in Columbus. Craig McBride of Hillsboro became vice chairman, with Ann Makley cited as a possible new secretary and Carl Smith still unresolved. The board adopted per-parole voting, delaying open-file decisions and secretary appointments for next week. Frank Sotak and McBride were sworn in before the meeting began.
Elyria merchants met in the Chamber of Commerce to discuss downtown Christmas lighting. Plans call for colorful lights strung across streets during the holiday shopping season, echoing the approach used in recent years.
In Denver a Federation leader said the Committee for Industrial Organization sees potential in a ten member panel to explore an end to labor strife. Atlantic City quoted the C I O proposing a peace conference with ten members from opposing sides meeting in Washington during the week of October 25. The move follows a telegram to AFL Secretary Frank Morrison after the federation tentatively accepted a prior C I O proposal.
Gordon McKay of Cleveland, an authority on traffic safety, will address the Elyria Rotary Club at noon on Tuesday at the Elks' Restaurant. This marks a return appearance after a year, prompted by many members requesting his talk.
John Henry Davis 112 died Wednesday at a Bainbridge home. Born May 23, 1825, he lived in Fayette County and was once able to read without glasses. A 107 windstorm left him bedbound and wheelchair bound. He is survived by 150 descendants including 12 children, 49 grandchildren, 102 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren. Funeral was held today at Whiteoak Church near Latham.
Col Leonard P Ayres economist and chairman of the Economic Policy Commission discusses the stock market downturns at the American Bankers Association convention. He notes industrial production fell from August to September and shows October declines but argues a full depression is unlikely. He warns declines may trigger cautious spending and postponements in autos homes and factories, potentially worsening business despite solid fundamentals.

SAN FRANCISCO October 15 Ch June England a 22 year old night club dancer lay dying from bichloride of mercury poisoning as anonymous friends sent costly flowers to a private hospital room. Police note she drove an expensive unclaimed car to the hospital and has a sister who also dances in clubs. Doctors and a poison specialist attended her. an antidote exists but must be given promptly.
Plans for the 1937 38 Lorain County village and rural schools basketball season will be discussed next Monday night at the Elks Restaurant. Superintendents and principals will join the regular meeting after the officials business session led by County Superintendent C A Gibbons. A N Smith Elyria High School teacher and county league official director will discuss official assignments with district leaders.
Miss Geeraldine Schatz daughter of Mr and Mrs Curtis Schatz near Now Bavaria awoke from her third four day sleep in a year due to a nervous disorder and was reported weak but in normal condition at Holgate.
Local Red Cross work reviewed at First M. E. Church dinner as about 100 workers prepare to canvass Elyria and townships Monday. Thirty two people named to the executive board for the coming year, fifteen from Elyria and seventeen from the townships, with numerous community leaders listed.
Service Director J. D. Faxon reported that 28 men sat the civil service exam at Elyria High School for four patrolman posts in the city police department. One vacancy will be filled by November 1 upon Patrolman Frank Waldron’s retirement. The other three slots arise from the police reorganization ordinance awaiting council first reading. A later November exam will seek a sergeant detective, with papers to be graded in Columbus.
In Cincinnati, Prosecutor Dudley M. Outcast plans to seek the death penalty for Anna Marie Hahn, 31, charged with the murder of Jacob Wagner, 78, and suspected in the deaths of several elderly German acquaintances. Jury of 11 women and one man selected. Granda the only man juror. The state accuses Hahn of poisoning Wagner to gain his estate. she is mother to a 12 year old boy.
Hyde Park October 15 The president said the nine power treaty conference in Brussels would seek to mediate the Chinese Japanese war and might begin his broader peace program. He declined specifics on US policy, noted no formal invitation yet, and said questions on Shanghai killings go to Washington. Pope Pius XI aid to Japan not confirmed.
Two Lorain men Harlan Curtis and Jack Mauthe deny charges of obtaining $715 under false pretenses from Alfred Damm. They are held on $2,000 bond and to appear for a preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace Joseph Petro.
Vatican officials deny reports that the Holy See instructed missionaries in the Far East to back Japan against China. The church reiterates opposition to Communism and says it will combat communist tendencies without sending any memorandum urging support for Japan. Cardinal Fumasoni-Bovidi called the rumor baseless.
