Washington Oct. The industrial conference shows no quick settlement of the steel strike. Debates occur behind closed doors with public group members pushing for a supreme court of labor to arbitrate industrial conciliation. Prospects of labor bolting loom as the conference resists immediate arbitration. Continued on Page 7.
Washington October 15 President Wilson will not allow adjournment of the national industrial conference until all options to resolve the steel strike dispute are exhausted White House aides said despite his illness he is informed of the conference debate over arbitration and aims to prevent any move that would jeopardize its success The session resumed after a three day recess and immediately tackled arbitration as the central issue with the steel strike remaining the key topic of discussion
Dairymen across a district supplying Cleveland with most of its milk raise seven thousand dollars to cover trial expenses after seven leaders of the Ohio Farrarm Association were indicted for alleged Valentine law anti trust violations. The seven executive members including H. W Ingersoll and Richmond were found not guilty by a Cuyahoga county jury. Contributions come from dairymen through various channels.
Dr W B Hubbel spoke at the Rotary club about his France service with the medical corps. He described food, camp life, and conditions, noting the scale of the effort and efforts to keep peace with fellow doctors.
Washington reports President Wilson remains in touch with government affairs while Dr Grayson treats his prostate condition. A briefing said the President slept well after a restless night and showed signs of improvement with rest restored.
The Carnegie Steel Ohio works resumed operations with two blast furnaces starting up and plans to bring more departments online. Briar Hill Steel opened five open hearth furnaces and Youngstown Sheet & Tube added sheet mills. A large share of skilled labor had not yet returned, and total striker returns were estimated at about seven thousand, roughly 20 percent of the local work force in Youngstown and East Youngstown.
Elyria Lodge 103 initiated twenty three candidates last evening with the first degree. Twelve were from Grafton, as the lodge pursues a strong prosperity and a drive for fifty members in November. Over thirty more are ready for the new class, and homecoming day on Thursday evening October 23 is planned with a large local turnout and a food program.
Four commercial missions from Strance England Belgium and Italy arrived in the United States to study economic conditions and foster closer trade relations with America and the allies. The group of thirty six prominent manufacturers merchants and bankers will join the Inter Allied Trade conference to establish a board to settle world trade matters after the war. Edward A Filene said the mission aims to connect Americans with European leaders, encourage cooperation, and restore normal trade. James S. Alexander stated the committee seeks sound, long term trade relations between Europe and the United States through practical, mutually beneficial means.
A display of six large deer heads with substantial antlers will be shown at the Cleveland store on Second Street for a few days. The event aims to attract hunters and showcase the mounted trophies from the recent season. Washington reports note Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor, is confined at home in nervous exhaustion with a fever. He remains in bed per his physician’s orders after attending a labor conference and dealing with peace treaty and steel strike issues. Mr and Mrs J WW Brown of 212 West Avenue announce a planned October 16 trip and a long western hunt lasting ten months in the northwest, with remaining time in Los Alamos and California.
Mineola New York reports Lieut Bélvin W Maynard leads the army air service transcontinental relay. Three flyers who completed the first half of the journey at Mineola are set to hop off for San Francisco today if weather allows. Maj Carl Spatz and Sent. E Kiel, who flew from San Francisco to Mineola, favor the westward return. the pair expressed hesitation about the return trip.
The United States Mine Workers issued an order directing all bituminous coal miners to cease production on Friday October 31 at midnight. The directive was signed by John L. Lewis acting president and William Green secretary treasurer.
John M Rice of Pittsburgh, consulting engineer for Elyria water works, outlines a ten to twenty year expansion plan. He cites a current population around 25,000, projecting 50,000 by 1925 and 70,000 by 1939, with Amherst adding about 3,000. The plan calls for a 10 million gallon daily plant, a new 26 inch main parallel to the existing line, and filtration on the lake shore. He urges rapid housing development to accommodate growth, estimating 3,000 to 7,000 homes needed this year.
The price of milk will rise tomorrow by one cent per quart and the rest of the scale follows with sixteen cents per quart, five cents per pint, cream thirteen and one third cents per half pint, skim milk half cent per quart, buttermilk one cent per quart. Retailers say they must cover higher costs from producer to public. Prices had been raised October 10.
Advices from Tondon report Gen. Denigen's forces seized the important city of Orel along with thousands of prisoners and vast amounts of material. The announcement arrived today, noting the significant victory and large haul.
Sheriff XN. PB. Backus of Elyria and Detective Frank Lenihan are expected back Friday or Saturday from Los Angeles with William Treble, a dismissed cashier, and Walter Davies who embezzled 90000 from the City Bank of Loraln. Treble fled August 5 after a bank draft probe, two indictments remain outstanding. Lenihan provided the lead from a letter to Treble’s wife. In New York, a steamer message reported 128 aboard Venesia. unrelated note: a birth in Akron on October 24 to Mr and Mrs F and Ms Tyogy moved Meowigri.
