Wellington officials say the district expanded a tennis court area into a 200 by 120 foot parking lot without planning commission review or the required variances. The board granted a variance for 60 perpendicular spaces but Backus must file full paperwork and obtain planning commission approval.

OSU leaders defend Arafat speaking invitation

Ohio State University officials defended their plan to invite Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat only if Israel's prime minister received a similar invitation. The stance sparked anger from the Arab Student Association, which dropped its plan and accused OSU of double standards. President Kirwan said free speech was not restricted and noted prior instances of invited leaders on campus.

OSU coach in pickle over Mt Olive endorsement

AP report says Ohio State coach John Cooper plans to endorse Mt Olive Pickle Co ads, drawing a migrant workers union protest. Baldemar Velasquez, founder of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee, says the group will organize a boycott in March to push for a three way contract with growers and workers. The union represents over 7,000 migrants in Ohio and Michigan. Mt Olive president Bill Bryan notes ads on Cooper's call-in show and Ohio radio. Cooper says he has not signed a contract and knows little of the boycott. OSU must approve endorsement deals and a request was left with Athletics Director Andy Geiger.
