Fire destroys abandoned building on West Avenue in Elyria

A morning blaze at 1505 West Avenue destroyed an abandoned structure in disrepair and damaged Ralphs Place next door. Firefighters, arriving at 4:45 a.m., battled flames for about an hour, melting siding and power lines while neighborhood electrical service remained intact. Authorities have not determined a cause and estimate damages at 100000 against county tax records valuing the building at 43400. The property owner, Sarah Peak of Cleveland, faces 83 code violation counts with Oct. 22 court date.

Oberlin man arrested on cocaine trafficking charges

Ezekial Allen Chaney, 18, formerly of Oberlin now of Washington DC, was arrested Friday after police received a tip of a large cocaine stash. Officers found 79 racks of crack cocaine at a Groveland Street home. He faces drug trafficking possession of criminal tools and possession of drugs charges and was to be arraigned in Oberlin Municipal Court. He remains in county custody.
