A Columbia University study from three Manhattan hospitals found pregnant women who smoke have about 1.8 times the miscarriage risk of nonsmokers. Among 574 miscarriages, 40 percent involved smokers versus 26 percent in deliveries. researchers note nicotine constricts vessels reducing oxygen to the fetus.
