The Elyria Public Library marks the first anniversary of its $601,000 Third Street home. Librarian Donald J. Sager cites a 16 percent circulation gain to 265,032 and 10,000 more books to surpass 100,000. Borrowers rise to 23,407 from 20,237 in 1967. The film department shows the largest growth.
Oberlin city council approved a unanimous resolution opposing expansion of the Lorain County Regional Airport. It calls for Oberlin representation on the airport authority and urges county commissioners to restrain the authority from beyond the plans approved by the regional planning commission.
The five member Oberlin Recreation Commission quit citing competition with the city council over recreation programs. The resignation follows a disrupted work session and a summer shift of projects to the Oberlin Community Foundation.
A Wellington resident, E. Stuart Perkins of Oak Brook Illinois, becomes vice president and part owner as National Connector Corp of Minneapolis buys Butler National for 12 million dollars. The merged firm will market VAC aerial navigation devices with offices in Oak Brook Kansas City and Wichita. Perkins leads the research center at Oak Brook while VAC engineering and marketing move to Kansas City. Perkins, a Wellington High School graduate, has long worked in aviation research.

A 28 year old bush pilot from South Porcupine Ontario, Brian Steed, had his right arm hacked off by a propeller on a Green Water Lake landing. He crawled back aboard the seaplane and flew 15 miles to Lake Shebanowan before another pilot flew him to Fort Arthur for treatment. The accident occurred last Saturday but details emerged tonight.
The Czechoslovak Communist Party Presidium met to consider Alexander Dubcek's resignation offer amid Soviet demand for normalization. The session followed his Kremlin talks and signs showed indecision over accepting Moscow's course including press censorship, a purge of officials, and indefinite Soviet troop presence.
Two Wallace for President offices in Lorain County plan to unite after a North Ridgeville meeting. Both refuse to recognize Wilbur Hughes as county chair. Betty Smith is tentatively empowered to run county operations as the Wallace ballot issue hangs in legal limbo awaiting the US Supreme Court decision.
UPI reports U S infantry and paratroop reinforcements battled North Vietnamese troops near Trang Bang, 25 miles northwest of Saigon. Eight Americans killed and 13 wounded as heavy fighting raged into a second day with 147 Communists reported dead.
