Nagy Appointed Section Head In Chest Campaign

Elyria figure Stephen R. Nagy named chairman of the commercial national firms section of the 1954 Elyria Community Chest campaign. The drive aims to raise 145 835 from retail and wholesale firms with HQs outside Elyria to support health, welfare and character building agencies. Nagy praised national firms for community responsibility and urged ongoing support. A Cleveland homicide investigation linked a 22-year-old woman to a case involving a gun and a former trucker suspect. Police traced a watch to her and sought matching shell casings from Harrisburg authorities. The case follows a turnpike killing spree that left two drivers shot and wounded last summer.

Suspect Sought in East After Broadcast Dispatch

A description of the man was broadcast and dispatches have been sent to police in all states east of the Mississippi to locate the suspect. Believed in Cleveland Jalovec said he believes the man is still in Cleveland.

General Election Absentee Voting Period Open in Lorain County

Lorain County Board of Elections announced the start of the absentee voting period for the November 3 general election. Residents leaving the county or away may vote by visiting Elyria or Lorain offices or request ballots by mail. Disabled voters may apply now. servicemen may vote by request. Ballot return deadline is 6:30 p.m. Thursday October 28 for absentee and disabled ballots, and noon on election day for servicemen ballots.

First Nurse Class Began at Elyria Memorial 45 Years Ago

On October 8 1908 Miss Martina Minnich and three fellow students started nurses training at Elyria Memorial Hospital marking the institution’s opening days after the Memorial Day wreck. The 1911 graduating class included Mrs Kelling and Miss Celia Cowen among others, with staff consisting of student nurses, a superintendent and assistants, two day supervisors and one night supervisor. Official dedication ceremonies occurred the week of October 26 1908.

Two Elyria Children Recover From Polio Attacks

Five year old Jean Leuser and seven year old Kenneth Koepp from Brace Avenue were treated in Elyria and Cleveland for polio. Jean’s mild case led to discharge with home care undecided while Kenneth remains in hospital with spinal polio. Gamma globulin inoculations were given nearby as a precaution. Kenneth attends St. John’s Lutheran School and Jean Edison School. family and neighbors support them at home.

Indian Skull Exhibit Opens From 1880 Excavation

C C Lord Elyria Township Justice of the Peace and Professor F S Reety unearthed a skull in Shef field Township in 1880. Rosen Signs for $10,000 Increase in 1954 Contract

Cleveland Indians third baseman Al Rosen, a top candidate for the American League MVP, signed his 1954 contract with an estimated $10,000 raise. Terms were not disclosed but it is believed Rosen's salary rose from $75,000 to $85,000.

Conflicts In Stories Reported In Bobby Greenlease Case

Kansas City police say they are convinced Carl Austin Hall the 37 year old ex convict and his mistress Bonnie Heady killed six year old Bobby Greenlease and took a $600000 ransom. Investigators question Marsh as triggerman amid inconsistencies in confessions. The child was found buried near a St Joseph Missouri home and warrants were issued. all three remain charged with first degree murder.

Plea Over Navigability of Stream Near Lake Erie

Plaintiffs claim the stream has long been used by pleasure fishermen for access to Lake Erie and that defendants operated boat liveries and docking. Testimony shows dredging kept the stream open, previously marshy, with a Kansas City to St Joseph dispute over access and ransom negotiations noted. The appeal questions navigability as Judge Pincura deemed only navigability as the issue.

Hall testified that the son of auto dealer Robert C Greenlease Sr was alive minutes after his Sept 28 abduction from an exclusive Roman Catholic school. He said later that night he and Mrs Heady drove to St Joseph and found the child dead with a bullet in the head.
