Tokyo reports indicate Japan may denounce the nine power treaty linking major nations and backing China. Officials fear a break with the League of Nations and U.S. condemnation, with Tokyo prepared to pursue its own path in Asia and boycott a Far Eastern conference.
The western high pressure area extends this morning to the Ohio Valley and Texas, dominating weather over most of the United States. Scattered showers occurred in the past 24 hours over the Ohio Valley and northeast with light snows north of the Great Lakes. Temperatures have fallen in the lake region, Ohio Valley and Plains States with light frost into upper Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska.
Severe rains flood trenches and roads in Shanghai region flooding International Settlement areas. Thousands of Chinese refugees suffer sleeping in doorways as air raids pause. Japanese air power sharply reduced though bombings continue on Chinatowns and rail lines.
A violent storm struck central Italy causing floods and damage across Rome and Pistoia. Telecommunication lines failed as torrential rains and lightning swept the region. a family of five was reported killed by a landslide in the Pistoia district. Mussolini remained at Rocca Della Caminate on the coast as the storm expanded northward toward the Adriatic in early reports.
League of Nations delegates in Geneva hailed the U S state department policy statement as a common front for peace and condemnation of Japan. A spokesman praised the move as aligning with the Nine Power and Kellogg Briand treaties and said the Pacific conference could be joined by the United States and Japan. Letters went to 17 Nine Power signatories inviting a Pacific conference with Russia and possibly Germany.
Washington October 7 the army engineers report estimates a 152 million dollar cost for a new 110 mile waterway from Rochester Pennsylvania on the Ohio river to Wheeler creek near Ashland Ohio via the Beaver Mahoning Grand river channels. Pending action by engineers boards and War Secretary Woodring.
Paris Oct 7 Premier Ca mille Chautemps pledged France to support any international effort to halt war in China and Spain. He spoke to the American Club of Paris and urged all nations to respect the integrity of others and abstain from ideological war. He lauded Roosevelt's Chicago peace speech and cited the visit of American Legionnaires to World War battlefields.
Federal Judge Patrick T. Stone warned William J. Donovan chief defense counsel for major oil companies charged with a price fixing conspiracy to cease quoting President Roosevelt. Stone criticized the defense statement claiming offenses were committed because of cooperation with the President's recovery program.
Plans near completion for the 1937-38 Lorain County Education Association meeting. It will be held next Wednesday evening at the First M. E. Church in Elyria. Dr. E. E. Lewis of Ohio State University will speak, with special musical numbers by the county concert ensemble.
The CCC camp superintendent R. W. Wander resigns effective October 15 to join Hicks-Cobley Company with offices in Pittsburgh and Toledo. Wander led drainage work and the camp was noted as one of the most productive in the state. He will be succeeded by C. V. Holman, former superintendent at Sidney, Ohio.
Mrs Catherine Austin of Root and Sprague roads has bagged seven squirrels this season with a 410 gauge gun. The silver haired hunter says she dislikes publicity but her family and friends praise her as the main hunter in the household. Her husband Charles works for Lorain County Farm Bureau and her sons Vernon and Frank confirm Ma is the hunter.
Ellis Mohns 26 of Wellington is in Allen Hospital in critical condition after a car accident near Jules Tavern Route 20. Ray Rock 48 was fined $25 for intoxication. Arthur Nokes 25 of Oberlin is jailed for investigation. Claire Brooks of Oberlin sustained a 14 stitch facial wound. two Oberlin residents sought and one Elyria resident believed missing. The fight began after Mrs Steagall asked Brooks to remove Mohns and Rock from the tavern.
Y M C A enrollment campaign progress shows 173 memberships from men and boys after first reports. Men’s division totals 94 memberships while boys report 79 on Tuesday night, placing near one quarter of the 750 goal as of yesterday afternoon.
Mike Biwl of Irondale and Woodford avenue is in critical condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a fall down stairs in the Joe Barn block where he lives. Police say a possible fractured skull resulted from the incident today.
L. Ruggles of Bellevue, C., was fined $10 and costs after being arraigned by deputy sheriffs before Justice Preston Coon in Ridgeville for passing a school bus that was stopped for passengers yesterday.
In New York at Yankee Stadium Giants rely on rookie lefty Cliff Melton to slow the Yankees as Red Ruffing resumes for New York. After three innings the score reads Giants 1, Yankees 0 with an 8-1 final yesterday.
Miss Edna G. Moore librarian of the Elyria Library will speak at the Ohio Library Association annual meeting in Columbus. Other Elyria representatives include Miss Linda Cuyler and Miss Mary Fox, with C. W. Faxon attending the trustees program. The sessions cover standards for service, library management, and promoting library usefulness.
JOLIET IL Oct 7 The hunger strike at Stateville prison ended as inmates began eating again. Warden Joseph Ragen said the strike collapsed after meals were offered and the first World Series game was missed due to the radio system being shut off. Over 2,000 of 3,477 inmates participated at least once. Security measures included extra guards and tear gas as a precaution.
Wellington 61 year old F. B. Boyce, salesman for Farmers Grain and Milling, escaped serious injury after his car was struck by a northbound Yellow Line trolley at Griswold road. Deputy Pollock said the right side of Boyce's car hit a telephone pole, which was broken, and Boyce refused hospital care. The trolley was driven by F. Albert of Dewey Avenue, Elyria, with Boyce traveling east and the trolley north.
Washington reports from Oct 7 indicate Roosevelt likely to call a special session around Nov 15 to address four main areas including a comprehensive farm program, the Wages and Hours bill, public works restructuring, and federal government reorganization. Capitol Hill aides foresee foreign policy as a possible extended topic if convened.
Federal state and county officials invited to dedication of Grafton postoffice Sunday October 24 with 1 PM program at the post office and a banquet at the school auditorium to follow. Postmaster T Co Washington leads arrangements in a move long aimed at better facilities in Elyria built by A M Brenner.
Elyria High School girls’ physical education classes continue with lectures on hygiene and manners while the gym undergoes a new floor installation. Miss Marian Kemble notes the athletic program is suspended temporarily. the Leaders’ group sold Scotties megaphones and footballs to aid the band, selling out and awaiting a new supply to meet demand.
Plans for a Fall and Winter program of activities for Lorain County fruit growers will be started next Wednesday night at a meeting of the fruit growers' committee of the county agricultural extension service. Members of the committee are EB. S. Cotton, Elyria, chairman, John Schaepfle, Elyria, Paul Schmitkens, Lorain, Otto Knoble, Henrietta, Donald Wagem, Henrietta, Reuben Miller, Brownhelm, and F. E. Schriver and Henry.
Miss Ruth Stangus of Tiffin Ohio was sentenced to three years in Warrensville workhouse by Police Judge Lewis Drucker for stealing 16 dollars worth of merchandise from a downtown department store. William H. Gray warned the judge that Stangus had three prior similar convictions.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull said the United States may participate in consultations among nine power treaty signatories if invited. No invitation has been received yet, but Hull expects to take part, with the invitation source and mechanism not yet determined. The conference is seen as a step in mobilizing world peace efforts in the Far East, following the State Department's labeling of Japan as aggressor and violation of the nine power pact and Kellogg Briand pact.
Four district presidents of Ohio's zoning board of appeals were named in Cleveland by William S. Fitzgerald, former Cleveland mayor, before his death. Earle H. In Steubenville Ohio on October 7, a gas explosion at the Amsterdam Wolf Run mine killed Ralph Woodcock and Krank Lapsus both machine cutters. Forty other miners escaped from the gas-filled pit.
In Reno Senator Key Pittman chairing Foreign Affairs urges Britain and other nine power pact signatories to ostracize Japan to halt its invasion of China. He says refusing commercial and credit relations would stop the war without firing a shot, more powerful than military force.
In Columbus on October 7 the joint Senate and House poor relief committees completed final approval of four of seven proposed relief bills. The measures raise sales tax relief funding to 6.5 million for 1938, authorize short term notes to cover surplus, allow local levies for relief by bare majority, and permit localities to approve statutory relief levies similarly. Three bills remain to be approved, including state relief supervision and reform of tax provisions for relief funds.
Washington reports that the United States is poised to join consultations with signatories of the nine power treaty to address Japan's undeclared war on China. Observers expect prompt American action in line with Roosevelt's pledge to support concrete league measures to halt international anarchy and treaty destruction.
