Elyria, Ohio struggles with a shrinking police force from 53 to 43 officers after four resignations in three weeks. The FBI recommends 120 officers for the city of about 63,000. Pay, morale, and moonlighting contribute to turnover, with proposed raises tied to a 1969 income tax vote.
U S infantrymen chased Viet Cong through flooded delta after a two day base camp assault that left 169 enemy soldiers dead. One American killed and 25 wounded as 1,000 reinforcements sealed the camp and airpower hit targets from Da Nang to Saigon. Tet festival curfew eased, amnesty discussed for deserters.
