Arthur Hunt er escaped a smashed car in Detroit, later taken to Receiving Hospital. In Omaha Linda Foland, 21, released five children from her car as a tractor trailer collided at an intersection. Foland sustained minor injuries.
Lorain County faces a split Wallace for President effort with six leaders in dispute. Harold Harwedel notes a Monday meeting to resolve authority between two county offices. In Cleveland, U S District Attorney Bernard J. Stuplinaki announced a federal grand jury will probe the July 23 sniper killings that left three white policemen and seven Black civilians dead.
More than 1,000 US infantrymen and warplanes attacked a Viet Cong base camp in marshlands southwest of Saigon, killing at least 159 enemy soldiers with one American dead. A battalion sized force faced helicopter cordons, air strikes, and heavy artillery as reinforcements surged in.
In Buffalo, eight Main Street businesses were struck by gunfire from a passing car after a Wallace rally. No injuries were reported as Wallace and LeMay remained safe in a hotel. Earlier, about 8,500 attended his Memorial Auditorium speech amid large anti-Wallace demonstrations.
