Russia Township trustees reject strict landfill amendments

Russia Township trustees rejected several zoning amendments aimed at tightening landfill rules including hazardous waste limits and outside waste dumping bans. County to OK federal funds for job training plan

Lorain County Commissioners will approve about 1 million dollars in federally funded job training projects under JTPA with performance based contracts. Ten agencies selected by the Private Industry Council will share funds while the council, the commissioners, and the Ohio North Lake Consortium monitor progress. The exact JTPA grant amount awaits final congressional action.

Lorain County consolidates 80 precincts to save money

Lorain County board of elections cut 80 precincts this year reducing to 363 precincts with about 400 registered voters per site. Savings include 64 000 from consolidating voting locations and 30 000 from lower ballot printing costs. Boundary changes require voters to verify precinct on postcards.

Elyria backs resolution against nuclear waste on turnpike

Elyria City Council passed a resolution opposing hauling nuclear waste through Elyria via the Ohio Turnpike. NRC approved two northern Ohio routes to move 140 truckloads from West Valley New York to Wisconsin. Council President Seward urged action, warning of growing trucking through Ohio communities.

Riverside ban on Black River swimming delayed

Elyria council delayed action on a proposal to ban swimming and boating in the Black River. Safety and Health Committee chair Arthur Weber pulled the measure for further discussion after receiving public input mainly from canoeists.
