The Route 20 Association gathered in Norwalk for its second annual meeting with delegates from Dover Center to Delta. After routine financial and activity reports, Harold P Chapman delivered a well received talk to the attendees.
A new eight mile stretch of Route 102 from the Lucas County line to the Wood County line will open Friday at seven. The road has been closed for paving and will be a main feeder to Route 20. The Route 20 Association organized the project with Route 24 Association presence expected.
Engineer and State Highway Department officials discuss Ohio's highway network, its 11 750 miles, labor dominated costs, and a five year improvement plan. They note Route 20 traffic of 2000 to 6140 vehicles daily, and highlight recent fixes from Monroeville to Wakeman with plans from Elyria to Cuyahoga county line.

An east wind drives a 15,000 acre blaze from the Coast Range Divide toward virgin timber near Cochran Oregon. With 300 firefighters diverted to protect Cochran from extinction, 25 men are missing and feared surrounded near the head of Gales Creek. Fire wardens hope they fled east and may emerge today.
Bulletin from Tsitsihar reports that fifteen hundred Chinese troops under Li Hai Ching were killed by Japanese forces southeast of the city. Japanese headquarters issued the claim today.
Nineteen of twenty four members of the Women’s Auxiliary at Elyria Memorial Hospital pause for a luncheon during their monthly meeting. The group sews operating table covers towels glove cases and other supplies and operates a hospital library. Officers include Mrs Howard Barbour president and Mrs C S Johnson secretary.
Six boys aged 17 to 21 were ordered home by Capt. F W Zarnke under a 10 P M curfew after appearing for alleged onion theft from a truck at West avenue and Oberlin road. Truck owners M H Bailin and Phillip Berkowitz identified them. Charges threatened if they did not return home by 10 P M.
Alfred Kos an Avon Lake deputy marshal goes on trial before Judge A R Webber in a charge of shooting to wound Ralph Schibley 17 of Amherst on August 28 as four youths joked on highways. Kos admits firing but says he shot into the pavement to frighten them. defense contends the bullet glanced off pavement and struck the boy in the back. Jurors include William merriman Grace Park Philip Giffard and others from Elyria Lorain and Grafton.
A dog linked to two dead men may aid identification after a car crash near South Amherst last Saturday. A Monroe Michigan minister and a car owner retrieved the wrecked vehicle at the county jail. a dog believed to be in the car waited for its master. Police sent fingerprints to identify the victims. a card with the name Philip Joseph Deleon was found on one man.
Mayor W H Van Oster said the city would open talks with Ohio Fuel Gas Company after the state utilities commission set a 55 cent rate in the Columbus case. He sought a compromise near the commission’s fair rate with a $1 minimum charge and 55 cent per thousand cubic feet, while the company officials await Columbus guidance. The eight year dispute remains unsettled as both sides weigh a possible settlement and a looming Ohio Supreme Court appeal. The city plans a gas survey early next year as a preliminary step.
Nine boys' Sams in the YMCA campaign opened last night and tonight's report meeting will present progress. Workers will file reports throughout the week with no additional meetings. Several memberships were turned in at the opening meeting attended by nearly all workers. Tomorrow's larger gathering will include reports and a cider and doughnuts party for the boys.
LaGrange organizes a two day festival and homecoming with business and school leaders, featuring a rude band and the Elyria Drum and Bugle corps on Thursday evening, and a Friday parade led by the all county school band. Contests for children and talks are planned.

Fatally insured Massillon man dies after being struck by a Hartville truck on the Lincoln highway near Dalton.
Des Moines Iowa greets President Hoover with a split mood as a farmer protest parade and a Hoover welcome march pass downtown. Milo Reno leads the Farmers Holiday Association crowd while 140 officers guard the four mile parade route. The city, expecting 150000 visitors, braces for continued political tension following recent gubernatorial and national figures.
An automobile collision near Bellefontaine Ohio kills William Wooddell aged 48 and his wife Ella V. Wooddell aged 46. Their car collided with another vehicle near their home last night. Mrs. Wooddell died at the scene. Mr. Wooddell died several hours later.
