Oberlin College yesterday dedicated the Jesse Philips Physical Education Center featuring a large indoor pool. The design includes two six-lane Olympic sections for versatile races. Chief Photographer John Kenney captured the noontime faculty swim session from the spectator area.
Rockets struck Saigon less than four hours before the one man presidential election. Two civilians were killed and two wounded, with one rocket hitting a downtown police precinct and another near a Navy supply area. President Thieu blamed foreign influence for unrest as police seized opposition papers and urged high turnout.
Substantial progress toward settlement of the West Coast dock dispute was reported as East and Gulf Coast longshoremen walked out. President Nixon delayed a Taft Hartley cooling off period, with military shipments exempted as talks continued in San Francisco and New York.
Representative Richard H. Poff of Virginia urged President Nixon not to consider him for the Supreme Court. He argued confirmation would be lengthy and divisive, and pressed to fill the two vacancies promptly for the nation and his family.
About 300 inmates armed with homemade weapons rioted at the maximum security Pontiac Illinois State Prison. Two prisoners were shot in the legs and five guards injured as state troopers and local police responded. The disturbance followed a prison-yard gang fight and occurred amid nationwide demonstrations over Attica.
