Birth rate in Soviet Union falls sharply in 1960s trend
Demographer V Perevedentsev warns the Soviet birth rate is declining fast, risking a static population by the early 1970s. He cites a drop from 44 per thousand in 1926 to 18 in 1966, urbanization and higher living standards as factors, urges more data on family planning and changes to census questions and birth incentives.
