Army tanks and troops pressed on snipers as a student rally in Mexico City erupted in violence. At least 26 were killed and over 100 wounded, with 450 leftist students arrested as Olympic officials debated canceling the 1968 Games set to open in nine days.
The life of 9 year old Stanley Peters confined in Elyria Memorial Hospital since last December has become hopeful as more than 100 cards letters and gifts pour in since September 26 when his plight was featured in The Chronicle Telegram. His father says the response from Elyria Lorain County schools Boy Scouts and others brings him joy and gives him purpose while in traction for a leg condition. X rays show progress and if it continues he may return home sooner than expected.
UPI reports American B52 bombers dropped a million pounds of explosives on North Vietnamese forces around the Thuong Duc camp. Red troops shelled the outpost as siege entered its sixth day. U.S. and Vietnamese casualties tallied but not fully known. The action follows past Khe Sanh tactics and targets the An Hoa Valley corridor toward Da Nang.
A head on collision on East 34th Street killed Henry Rosario 13 the son of City Councilman Evelio Rosario. Several others including Olive Smith 78 Fred Cortez Cruz 16 and Mildred Rosario 13 were hospitalized with varying conditions. Police say Cruz swerved left of center and struck Smith’s car. eight people were taken to St Joseph Hospital.
Wallace introduces retired Gen Curtis LeMay as his vice presidential candidate in Pittsburgh. LeMay defends war effort in Vietnam and supports using nuclear weapons if needed, calling the campaign a peoples movement destined for victory on November 5. He criticizes truce talks and argues for hard US action.

A 21 year old Army Private Robert J Barry of Lorain died in an Army hospital in Vietnam from shrapnel wounds suffered August 18 near his armored personnel carrier. He was wounded with arm leg and chest injuries and lost vision in one eye. He enlisted January 24 and attended Admiral Fire my School.
