Posthumous Cardinal Mundelein Message Urges Neutrality Support
CHICAGO Oct 3 Cardinal Mundelein posthumously counseled the nation to let Congress and President Roosevelt handle neutrality amid Europe’s war. The radio address, read 12 hours after his death, urged Catholics to support the President’s neutrality program and trust his leadership to protect youth from war. Mundelein died in his sleep. The body will lie in state at Holy Name Cathedral, then be buried at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary Mundelein.

Boy Mistaken For Squirrel Shot By Father In Ohio Tragedy
Floyd A Billig Jr. a fourteen year old eighth grader from Painesville Ohio, climbed a tree with his father along the Grand River. The father fired at a moving shadow he mistook for a squirrel, killing his son. The elder Billig alerted responders, but Floyd died after surgery from a bullet wound to the head. He leaves a mother and five brothers.

Columbus Oct 3 State tax commissioner William S Evatt estimated that if Ohio voters approve the Bigelow Old Age Pension plan in November the measure would cost the state about 310 million dollars in 1940.
