Man charged with stalking Elyria police detective

A Sheffield Lake man, David Schmitz, 33, is indicted for stalking Elyria Detective Lisa Dietsche and her family. He faces charges of violating a protection order and menacing by stalking, with prior indictments for stalking retaliation and identity theft.

Cleaning Up the Black River by Elyria Fire Department

Elyria firefighters spent Friday on their annual riverbank cleanup of the Black River. They hauled away tires found on the banks and in the water. Firefighters Adam Nastick and Dave Seljan are pictured hauling debris up a steep bank downstream from the Cascade Park ford.

Oberlin grad found guilty in Dead Sea Scrolls fraud

Raphael Golb, son of a Oberlin College graduate, was convicted by a Manhattan jury on about 30 counts including identity theft forgery and harassment related to online attacks in the Dead Sea Scrolls debate. He was acquitted on one criminal impersonation count.

Stolen Purple Heart Returned Ahead of Lorain Ceremony

In Lorain, a Purple Heart awarded to World War II veteran Michael Demich was returned by a man who had bought it in a burglary. Despite the theft, plans proceed for a Thursday recognition lunch at DeLuca's Place in the Park by the Lorain Rotary Club and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 20. Demich will receive a new Purple Heart before a color guard and about 25 family members attend.

Ganley faces harassment lawsuit in 13th District bid

A Cleveland woman sued Brunswick car dealer Tom Ganley alleging he propositioned and groped her after she volunteered for his campaign. The 39 year old claims a 2009 meeting at Ganley’s dealership office included unwanted advances and a $100 offer to buy lingerie. Ganley seeks to unseat incumbent U S Rep Betty Sutton in Ohio’s 13th District which covers Medina Lorain and Summit counties. Lawyer Brent Buckley called the suit extortion and politically opportunistic and said investigations found no confirmation.

Oberlin Schools Takes Steps to Hire Architect

Oberlin district plans to hire an architectural firm to draft a plan for a new central campus or renovated schools with community input. A committee of staff and residents will help set qualifications, and firms will be reviewed by year end. Bond funding is likely to back district costs.

Lorain officials postpone the Downtown Lorain Sidewalk Sale due to bad weather. The sale is rescheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct 9 and will close Broadway from Fifth Street to Eighth Street. Staff reports.
