The Elyria school board voted at a special meeting to sell Erie Elementary School to Education Alternatives for 612000 amid an 11th hour lawsuit to block the sale. Superintendent Paul Rigda said the unanimous vote reflects a fair price and taxpayer interest.
The Senate unanimously passed a bill to force television stations and cable firms to keep commercials at the same volume as the programs they interrupt. House approval preceded it and differences to be reconciled after the election. The FCC has long faced complaints about loud ads and is exploring feasible regulation.
Elyria will receive an $812,000 COPS grant to fund four rookie officers for three years. The department plans to shift three veteran officers to the Neighborhood Impact Unit and assign one to patrol downtown as it pursues a $2.6 million income tax levy for ongoing police funding. The grant supports roughly $270,000 annually.
Fire Chief Thomas Brown must implement layoffs and demotions after an arbitrator sided with firefighters on deferred pay. Eleven firefighters will be laid off and six demoted, taking effect Saturday, leaving Brown with about a 23 percent reduction in personnel as he rewrites the schedule.
The CPSC reports recall of 7 million Fisher-Price Trikes and Tough Trikes along with over 1 million High Chairs due to injury risks from protruding ignition keys and tray peg injuries. Ten reported injuries include six requiring medical care and seven stitches.
