Cleveland’s Big Three deliver in a must win game, with Justice driving in four, Lofton adding three hits and a steal, and Alomar contributing three doubles to power the Indians past the Red Sox 9-4 and equalize the series.
Boston manager Jimy Williams faced decisions on Game 4 and 5 as the Red Sox trail the Indians 2-1 in the ALDS. Pete Schourek or Pedro Martinez could shift, while Tim Wakefield struggled and the bullpen bore the burden in a 9-5 defeat.
Cleveland closer Mike Jackson, rested by a late-season lull, pitched two perfect innings in Game 2 of the ALDS to earn his first postseason save. He entered in the eighth, faced John Valentin in a tense moment, and finished the 9-5 win while avoiding a collapse.
The Indians overcome a disputed safe call at the plate by Brinkman as Sandy Alomar and Omar Vizquel combine for a late outfield relay. In the second inning, Alomar Lofton and Justice fueled a five run burst led by Justice’s homer to put Cleveland ahead 6 1. Burba earned the win with 5 2 innings of three run ball and Mike Jackson closed out the game for Boston.
