Alan Spitzer's $100 million riverfront project in Lorain is paused after his attorney Anthony Giardini cited unfavorable publicity. He withdrew a request for a 75 percent tax abatement, noting the Chronicle-Telegram article of Aug 30 alleging personal ties to the city administration. Spitzer did not attend the Finance Committee meeting.

ELYRIA The former director of the Sheffield Lake Recreation Department was found guilty on six counts of corrupting another with drugs. Kathleen Kovach, 43, faced one day of testimony and waived a jury trial. Sentencing follows a background report by the probation department.
Dan Garcia a junior in the Elyria High Marching Band twirled his tuba at the Issue 5 pep rally held Wednesday at the American Legion Hall. The performance by the band and other student groups aimed to rally backing for the school levy on the November ballot.
Stoneco Inc will permanently close its asphalt plant on Pearl Avenue in Lorain. The Ohio EPA says the plant must cease operations by December 1 and cannot resume at that site. City officials celebrate the victory over pollution concerns.
Sheffield Lake police said three boys ages 12 and 14 confessed to starting a blaze that destroyed a storage building at a local lumberyard. They were charged with juvenile arson counts and taken to the detention home. Hearings were expected today in Juvenile Court.
At Oberlin High School two students ages 15 and 17 assaulted shop teacher Richard Garvelink at 8 40 AM after being told to quiet down. Garvelink was grabbed and hit several times. the trio fell to the floor as other students sought help. The two boys were taken to the county detention home. The 17 year old faces a juvenile felonious assault count.
