Unemployment Insurance Plank Faces AFL Vote
In Cincinnati the American Federation of Labor prepares to decide on a compulsory unemployment insurance plan. It would require three percent of employers payroll to fund benefits up to sixteen weeks at up to fifteen dollars weekly. Andrew Furuseth opposes, citing loss of trade union independence. Kennedy and Ickler argue for the measure as vital for militant labor and self-respect. Mathew Woll pins blame on big business for mass unemployment and urges reform beyond government action.
