Farm real estate taxes fall since the 1930s

Washington AP reports that farmers paid an average real estate tax of 45 cents per acre with land values low enough to equate to $1.52 per $100 of property value. A new Agriculture Department analysis shows land values drifting down from the 1970s, cutting the effective tax rate to about one third of the early 1930s. State and local governments may need to raise farm tax rates to keep revenue in real dollars. Total farm tax collections are discussed.
