Elyria Schools face 700000 shortfall in budget
Elyria Schools face a 700000 year end budget shortfall as business tax collections lag behind projections. Treasurer Steve Huzicko said only 7.4 million of an 8.1 million expected personal property tax has been collected through October, leaving a 98 million cash balance to cushion the impact. County figures show county wide business taxes down about 2 million with tax base reductions from inventory changes and exemptions. The district plans operating levies to sustain funding as two levies near expiration in 2004 and 2005 and a 2004 vote is anticipated to cover 2005 revenues.

Elevator trap shuts Elyria custodian in broken shaft
Elyria Lorain County Administration Building custodian Tony Jezewski, 70, was trapped for a few minutes when an elevator, out of service for days, doors closed at about 4 35 PM Tuesday. Fire Lt William Gall reported no injuries.
