Gov elect John Gilligan named former astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. to direct a citizen task force on environmental protection. The nonpartisan panel of 30 to 40 people will assess goals and structures for Ohio’s environmental programs with a preliminary report due in six months.
President Nixon decorated Son Tay Prison Camp Commando Team at the White House and pledged to use diplomacy and other means to free American POWs in Vietnam. He praised the daring but unsuccessful raid as a mission of mercy and a reminder POWs have not been forgotten.
Atomic Energy Commissioner Theos J. Thompson 52, and two others were killed when a Cessna 206 on a Park Service mission sank in Lake Mead. Pilot Charles Roland survived. search for bodies of Thompson’s aide Jack Rosen and Bill Smith of Reynolds Electrical and Engineering Co. continued.
A UPI report describes a jury of eight men and four women chosen for the Seattle Eight conspiracy trial amid courtroom uproar. The taunting crowd injured a girl who was removed by U.S. marshals while protesting prosecutor Stan Pitkin and Judge H Botdt. Seven defendants face charges of conspiring to damage the U S Courthouse in Seattle February 17 during a violent demonstration. Michael Justensen, 29, remains at large. Earlier, a note and pig gag were shown to Pitkin as a protest.

President Nixon dismissed Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel for lack of mutual confidence and named Rogers C. B. Morton as his successor. Morton, a former Maryland congressman and GOP chairman, would take over after Hickel’s abrupt departure amid tensions over policy and environmental pushback from business allies.
A 10 year old Elyria Township boy, Mark Meosky, was killed crossing Lake Avenue to meet a church bus. Driver Denver L. Dempsey, 51, of 145 Bell Ave, remained at the scene. the accident near List Street occurred as Mark headed to the Awana Club meeting at First Baptist Church. He died at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 6 25 p.m. and is survived by his parents two brothers and grandparents. Funeral plans are pending.

Lorain County Community College's soccer team edged Dupage Junior College to improve to 14-1 and earn a semifinal berth in the National Junior College Tournament in St Louis. Mercer of Trenton, the nation's top ranked, defeated Monroe NY 41 to 10 yesterday. The Commodores, coached by Jack Hess, will face Mercer today at 11 a.m. in St Louis. Details on page 1-3.
