First nuclear reactor to become national landmark option
In Richland Washington the B Reactor at Hanford, historic for producing plutonium for Fat Man, faces possible National Historic Landmark listing. A Park Service advisory committee will decide in December on including the reactor alongside Oak Ridge and Los Alamos in a national historical park narrative. Final decisions rest with Congress and Interior. The site, still radioactive, could be preserved or cocooned for safety while cleanup and security continue.
