Malibu wildfires scorch Southern California homes
A fast moving wildfire driven by Santa Ana winds ripped through Malibu canyons destroying 49 homes and damaging 27, forcing as many as 14,000 residents to evacuate. By Saturday afternoon the fire covered about 4,500 acres with 25 percent containment as 1,700 firefighters and air support worked to suppress the blaze.

Hungry man tries to break in on East 39th Street
Lorain police say Antonio Gauna 48 of Lorain attempted to force entry to a residence on the 900 block of East 39th Street citing a Thanksgiving dinner as motive. He was charged with violating a protection order and jailed after being found nearby. The woman said he kicked the door and threatened to break a window if not fed. He denied involvement.

Woman reports masked men attempted car theft at rail crossing
A Lorain woman told police two masked men tried to steal her car about 4:40 p.m. Thursday at a Reid Avenue railroad crossing. One man pressed his face to the driver window while the other opened the passenger door and ordered her out. She accelerated, knocking the second man down. Authorities searched the area but found no suspects.
