Elyria High Senior Wins Voice of Democracy Prize

Elyria High School senior ed Berg won the local Voice of Democracy contest over classmates and rivals from Elyria Catholic and Ridgeville High schools. Winifred Emery and Rita Guttman placed second and third as three Oberlin College judges selected the winners. Berg earns advancement to district and state competition with a recording of his speech.

Living Cost Index Reaches New Peak in Mid-October

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an eighth straight monthly rise in the cost of living, pushing the index to 115.4 percent of 1947. The increase, two tenths of a percent from September to October, raises wages for about one million auto workers by two cents an hour. Prices climb across housing, apparel, goods and services, medical and personal care, and entertainment such as movie admissions and radio and television sets.

The bulletin notes a 0.2 percent foods dip and a 1.2 percent drop from October 1952, but auto industry wages rise with living-cost index. GM workers gain $10 monthly. 385 000 hourly staff and 105 000 salaried employees affected. Prices remain above June 1950 by 13.4 percent amid mixed signals of possible decline.

North takes oath as U S marshal for northern Ohio

Xavier North, former State Highway Department official and Lorain GOP executive, was sworn in today by Federal Judge Paul Jones as U S marshal for the northern Ohio district. Born in California and living in Lorain, North was recommended by the late Sen. Taft and appointed by President Eisenhower on Oct. 30. He will earn a $9,600 annual salary.

EHS HI-Y Presents Special Holiday Program at Elyria HS

A Thanksgiving program staged by the Senior HI-Y at Elyria High School featured an invocation Scripture reading a Thanksgiving prayer and four talks including The First Thanksgiving The Proclamation The Meaning of Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving 1953 The event ran during a double assembly with leadership by Bill Isenberg. Separate sessions invited juniors seniors to College Night with Miss Marian Kemble and George Thourot in the cafeteria and gym respectively.

Jury to Decide Leiva Murder Case This Afternoon

A three judge panel will determine Pedro Leiva's fate for first degree murder in the July stabbing of Juan Marquez in Lorain. Leiva testified last, claiming the police statement was coerced and that Marquez offered his coat. prosecutors say the motive was robbery. The trial, begun yesterday, featured five witnesses, with evidence focusing on intent and the single stab wound.
