Landis dies in Chicago long-time baseball commissioner
Kenesaw Mountain Landis, famed for banning the eight White Sox players involved in the 1919 World Series fixing, died in Chicago at St Luke's Hospital after a bout of illness. A federal judge before his baseball tenure, Landis led the sport from 1920 to 1944, shaping its governance amid the Black Sox scandal and postwar era. His death ends a controversial era marked by strong, sometimes harsh, enforcement of fairness in the game.
