Officials in nearly a dozen states warn a crucial health insurance program for low income children is near exhaustion as Congress missed a September 30 deadline to extend CHIP funding. About 9 million children and 370,000 pregnant women nationwide rely on CHIP, with some states set to exhaust funds by December if action is not taken.
Lorain County shoppers lined up hours before opening at Midway Mall with Best Buy and J C Penney opening in the afternoon. Erin Robles said rumors of a 50 inch 4K TV for 179 drew long lines while managers described the day as orderly and steady. The National Retail Federation reports average per shopper spending in 2016 was 935.58 with a forecast 0.4 percent rise.
In Brownhelm Township the 86th annual Santa visit tradition continues with a church basement gathering and doorstep toy deliveries for local children. A Santa supper at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Brownhelm Historical School and Museum invites all current and former Santas for soup, sandwiches, and dessert in appreciation of their service.
The 2017 Not-Forgotten Box drive runs through December 15. Donations are welcome at The Chronicle lobby 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday at 225 East Ave. Elyria, with a Saturday dropoff from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on December 9.
