Gary William Beal 71 of Wellington died November 18 2012 at home surrounded by family. He was born July 27 1941 in Oberlin and retired from Forest City Technologies. Vermilion man charged after cigarette theft in Lorain store

Patrick Simmons, 22, of Vermilion admitted he was a junkie after allegedly taking two cartons of Newport cigarettes from Cigarette Outlet on Oberlin Avenue. A bystander, John Riley, 49, chased and tackled him in the parking lot, leaving Simmons detained until police arrived. He pleaded not guilty to robbery at arraignment with a pretrial set for November 26.

Lorain man beaten amid jealousy dispute at bar

Police say a 44 year old Lorain man was severely beaten by two men after a bar dispute over a woman who works at a bank. One assailant used a baseball bat and a flower pot was thrown at a vehicle, with Ortiz sustaining facial injuries and knocked out teeth. Ricardo Ortiz described the attack and witnesses corroborated the floral pot incident and subsequent beating. Elvin Marquez Jr., 22, was later arrested for felonious assault after admitting to punching Ortiz. another suspect is being investigated.

LCCC opens Ridge Campus with eco friendly design and IT programs

Lorain County Community College unveils the University Partnership Ridge Campus near Lorain with green features such as permeable paving and bio swales. The site targets commuting and adult students from Lorain and Cuyahoga counties and offers programs in digital forensics, Web development, information systems, computer science, engineering, entrepreneurship, and network communications. Courses begin January 7 for UT’s computer science and engineering program and February 25 for a 10 week LCCC session. registration is at the Bass Library with details at the college site or (440) 366-4800.

Lorain Demolition List Advances with Blight Plan

City Council adopted an updated dangerous buildings ordinance as part of anti blight efforts. City officials issued bids to demolish 14 structures across Lorain including 601 Colorado Ave and 41916 E. 30th St with addresses listed by the Economic and Community Development Department.

Lorain Targets Blight With Demolition Action Plan

The city sets a 30 day window for repairs or appeal to the Demolition Board of Appeal chaired by city officials including the Engineer and Fire Chief. Lorain battles foreclosures posting 1 in 292 homes at risk, higher than county and national rates, as the Nuisance Inspection Task Force and land bank push demolitions. The city aims to remove 150 to 200 buildings next year with potential federal funds through a Li nd Bank program and related legislation.
