Crystal Schroeder claimed the Jim Cobb Trophy becoming Lorain County's most-decorated 4-H horse woman this year. Other notes include legal fights, political plans, and local weather with rain chances and temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
Elyria mayor Keys calls special council session to set a Feb. 4 election for a 0.25 percent income tax hike that could raise 1.5 million yearly for the police. The plan, defeated narrowly, aims to fund 25 officers, more cruisers, drug surveillance gear, civilian dispatchers, and training while seeking bipartisan backing.
A 15 year old surrendered after a Wilkes Villa shooting injuring Walter Benson 55 who was treated at Elyria Memorial and then MetroHealth. Benson survived a face and jaw surgery while another Wilkes Villa man Jerry Cannon 28 was wounded Monday night on Pratt Boulevard and remains in fair condition. A felonious assault warrant was issued for Jamero Howard. The boy says Benson pulled a knife before the pistol shot. The case and motive remain under police review.
The Elyria school board voted 5-0 to lay off the three asbestos removal staff including Glenn Roderick, citing lack of manpower and resources. The team had been idle since October as outside contractors will perform future asbestos work. Superintendent Lester Schultz backed the move and denied union busting claims.
Elyria report says Cheryl Watkins aunt of victim Bill Wright 19th birthday party attendee bought beer for minors. Lorain County detective Lt Ralph Gale says she faces a first degree misdemeanor with up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine after Watkins volunteered for questioning and matched a purchased-beer description.
A flu like virus sweeps area classrooms closing The King's Academy Schools in Elyria and North Olmsted St. Mary's Berea and St Peter's North Ridgeville also shut. Berea High reports 230 absences, double normal, with Tuesday totals near 236 and widespread fever and sore throat complaints across districts. Absentee rates vary by school and grade.
