Two women captives recount a sparing routine in the U.S. Embassy siege. They spoke of being chained to chairs, allowed books and three cigarettes daily, and meals of bread, cheese, and butter. Routines mixed reading with hunger and tense hope as the 17 day standoff persisted.
Ten more American hostages, all Black and women, freed by Moslem students, flew to Wiesbaden Germany for medical tests and debriefing after a 17 day ordeal. They joined three others released Monday, as protests outside the Tehran embassy continued and U.S. officials described the group as in good shape.

City engineers say load limits and restrictions will remain until spring, with concrete powdering and rusted reinforcing steel prompting safety measures.
