Union Thanksgiving Service at First Christian Church

The Elyria Council of Churches holds its annual union Thanksgiving service on Thanksgiving Day at 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church. Speaker is Dr John W Flynn of Elyria Home for the Aged, with the host church choir directed by Oliver Shubert. Rev Henry K Shaw leads, organist Mrs Frederick Meng provides music. New Cold Wave Blasts Ohio with 60 mph Winds

A strong cold front hit Ohio with winds up to 60 miles per hour. The Weather Bureau warned of temperatures dropping to as low as 15 degrees tonight. Rain was expected to turn to snow flurries in western and northern areas. A suburban school closed for half a day due to a power outage.

The weather service warns of a stormy night with strong winds and snow flurries. Temperatures fall to around 15 degrees in the northwest and near 2 in the east and south portions. Tuesday brings partly cloudy skies and cooler conditions with highs from 30 in the northwest to 35 in the southeast.

Colorful Military Ball at Elyria High School

More than one hundred couples from twelve Lorain County high schools attended Elyria High School’s first Military Ball held in the gym. The event featured a 30 minute Grand March led by George Berg and Dick Speigle, decor by a six person committee, and refreshments arranged by Nancy Flaherty and Joan Hyman. Music by Jay Ross’s orchestra and praise from Elyria band director Walter Von Brock marked the night as a promising annual event.

Eight Year Old Boy Struck By Car In Village Incident

Eight year old Fred McGuire son of Mr and Mrs F D McGuire of 111 West Bridge Street was knocked down by a car at Broad and Chestnut streets shortly after 8 am while walking to school. The driver Frank Kubancik Lorain turned onto Chestnut and struck him. The tar stopped immediately. He was taken home to be examined by a physician who reported mainly shock and no serious injuries.

Several Items Are Stolen From Cars

Police report three cars ransacked Saturday night at Gates school. Items stolen include a $40 tool box from Mr Gasser of South Amherst, a $10 smoking blanket from Mr Barthomew, and a blanket two couches and a flashlight valued at $20 from Mr E Laccobee of Chestnut Ridge road.

License Suspended for New Mexico Doctor

The New Mexico State Board of Medical Examiners suspended the license of Dr. Nancy Campbell, an obstetrician, after she confessed kidnapping a nine year old child. Investigators report the incident occurred in Santa Fe and involved the missing child’s guardians.

Victim Martha Bodnar Dies After Route 57 Crash

Nine year old Martha Bodnar a ward of Lorain County Child Welfare Department was fatally injured when struck by a southbound car driven by Lester Dougherty 51 of Durkee Road as she and her twin sister Catherine crossed Route 57 near Grafton after church services Martha died at Elyria Memorial Hospital from a fractured skull Dougherty said the girls ran from behind the car and he could not avoid them Mrs Knechtges of Grafton drove away after dropping the children off at the scene Services for Martha were planned at Immaculate Conception Church Grafton with burial in St Marys Cemetery Grafton.

Truman Seeks Rent Control Extension to March 31

President Truman urged Congress to extend federal rent controls to March 31. He spoke to Rep. Brent Spence, chairman of the House Banking Committee, seeking a six month extension via municipal action to allow hearings on a longer continuance. Many cities have voted to extend. others have not acted.

Lorain Board rejects Huber request for new election

Lorain County Board of Elections refused to consider Rep Walter B Huber request to hold a new election in Lorain County with only three candidates on the ballot for Congress from the 14th district and said it cannot alter election results. The board said it is an agent of the Secretary of State and lacks power to order a new election.
