Chili cook-off heats Midway Mall charity showdown
Nine area police and fire teams compete in a winner take all chili cook-off at Midway Mall to raise funds for chosen charities. Teams include Elyria and Vermilion departments and Lorain County sheriff units with judged chili for St Joseph's Shelter and other causes. Event begins 3 p.m. and donations fund the winning charity.

Lorain man arrested after shots fired during roadway dispute
Lorain police arrested 33 year old Matthew Neely on felonious assault with a weapon discharge of a firearm near a roadway using weapons while intoxicated and receiving stolen property after a 1 40 p m report of gunfire near West 17th Street and Oakdale Avenue. Neely admitted firing shots and asked to finish his beer before arrest. He was hospitalized for injuries before being jailed.

Lorain Man Breaks Hand Defending Against Robbers
A 36 year old Lorain man says two masked men threatened him with a small revolver near Daily Mart on Oberlin Avenue at about 11 15 p m Tuesday. He struck the gunman and punched one suspect causing their retreat. his hand was swollen and fractured. He was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center. The suspects were described as black males 18 to 20, about 5 7, 160 to 180 pounds, wearing black hooded sweatshirts.

Lorain man gets eight years in prison on gang charges
Freddie Sanchez 23 pleaded guilty to drug weapon gang and related charges as part of a plea deal. He will serve eight years on Dec 6 after four cases were resolved and is under house arrest with a warning of harsher time if violated.

Lorain man arrested for domestic violence assault
Lorain police charged 48 year old James Alan Kocak with domestic violence after he allegedly forced a woman into an unwanted car ride with her 2 year old granddaughter in the back seat. The incident began when the woman refused to give him $250 and ended with him slapping her and leaving with the keys. He was located later in a nearby apartment building.
