Economy still America's No 1 concern in 1990s mood

Dan Rather reports on how Americans rank the economy above politics and foreign policy. The piece notes low unemployment and inflation, yet rising worry about global troubles and government spending. It cites Texaco and Haliburton job cuts, falling oil prices, and farmers selling out as the economy shows mixed signals.

Dominique Moceanu seeks legal adulthood in Houston case

Dayton Daily News columnist sees Dominique Moceanu as a teenager pushing for independence rather than a doomed child star. The 17 year old filed to be declared a legal adult to avoid parental control, reaching an out of court settlement that let her live on her own. The Dateline interview revealed money and independence issues, not abuse, with estimates of a four million dollar parental cash call and a secure trust, while Dominique insists she plans to compete in the next Olympics.

Fed signals no rate cuts until next year amid mixed growth

The Fed held steady after a third rate cut in seven weeks, citing conditions that may support inflation control and sustained growth. Inflation runs about 1.6 percent, a dip from last year's 1.7 percent, while growth is seen at 3.5 percent this year slowing to 2.5 percent or less next year amid overcapacity and a surge of imports from distressed Asian economies. The trade deficit could reach a record $250 billion, largely with the Pacific Rim.

Jefferson and Clinton compared in a flawed historical debate

Thomas J. Lucente Jr. argues Jefferson was not Clinton and cites liberty versus abuses of power. He notes no evidence Jefferson lied under oath, contrasts habeas corpus and civil liberties, and discusses Hemings paternity possibilities while stressing the dead cannot be judged by modern standards.
