GOP leaders push jobs program but not tax cut timing
In Washington, Senate Majority Leader Baker and House Republican Leader Michel told President Reagan they will push a jobs program in the lame duck session starting Nov 29 but have little hope of accelerating the 25 percent income tax cut. They expect a highway and bridge program financed by a 5 cent per gallon gas tax to create about 20,000 jobs, while defense spending cuts loom. The unemployment rate stood at 10.4 percent as voters chose urgency on jobs over further tax relief.
