Avon Lake Parks and Recreation launches its first Deck the House holiday lights contest alongside the Holiday Lights Tour. Nicole Haas notes the event aims to boost home and business decorations and community spirit, with a prize for the winning display and photos posted on the city page.
LaGrange United Methodist Church at 105 W Main St will host a free Thanksgiving lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The Salvation Army Lorain Corps at 2506 Broadway will host a free Thanksgiving dinner at 5 p.m. Tuesday for all residents.
The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services launches a multimedia Be Present campaign to help at risk youth. Director Tracy Plauck says the effort raises awareness, provides resources, crisis intervention and care with the tagline Your Presence is a Present. It promotes support from friends classmates and siblings through a website social media print ads and PSAs.
State officials report Ohio’s unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent in October from 5.3 percent in September. The rate remained above the national 4.1 percent. Ohio also added 4,300 nonagricultural wage and salary jobs in October.
Lorain man Mark Calhoun II, 24, was indicted on involuntary manslaughter multiple drug counts and possessing tools. Police say he supplied drugs linked to the death of Justin Fisher, 22, at a Bell Avenue home. Calhoun was arrested Aug. 25 at a Speedway during a narcotics probe.
