Ohio Class A playoffs open with Pleasant in title run
Marion Pleasant, riding Ohio’s longest win streak, tops ranked 9-410 in a Class A semifinal against Tuscarawas Valley at Mansfield Stadium. Lorain Clearview and Middletown Fenwick meet in the other A semifinal at Upper Arlington. Semifinals set for today with title games Friday and Saturday in Massillon and Akron. Pleasant’s 36 straight wins feature QB Scott Ballinger as 300-game starter, while Tuscarawas Valley coach Larry Foltz seeks an upset. Clearview’s Otis Jenkins, Don Hitchens and QB Larry Fortner pace a fast offense. Fenwick’s Dick Martin and Dick Klapheke lead the air and ground game.

Top ranked Columbus Watterson, 10-0, will play Akron St. Vincent next Friday night in Massillon for the Class AA high school football championship after both teams won semifinal games. Watterson defeated Reading 12-6 in Troy as Art Yaroch connected with Chip Gentile on two touchdowns. Akron St. Vincent routed Uniontown Lake 42-6, with Greg Thurman scoring three times as the teams advance to the title game.
