Lorain County Tax Valuations Fall Amid Revisions In Elyria

Lorain County new valuation for taxation drops about 23 percent from the old total of 252 million to roughly 193.7 million, with Elyria down about six percent and Lorain over ten percent. Rural areas decline most and overall outside Elyria and Lorain shows a 32 percent drop. changes reflect removal of personal property from the tax base and shifting to licenses, with December first tax collection under the new law expected to show further adjustments.

Ouster Suit Against Gov Huey Long Dismissed

In Shreveport Louisiana on November 18 Judge T Bell dismissed Taeut Cyr lieutenant governor's ouster suit against Gov Huey P Mong Long. The court ruled Cyr lacked standing to seek removal of the governor who was also U S senator elect. Cyr's lawyers prepared to appeal.

Julian F. Vandenbroek a 40 year old former Henry County prosecutor was found dead in his wrecked car after a collision with a stationary steamroller near Napoleon Ohio. He leaves a widow and two children.

The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies in Ohio tonight and Thursday with likely showers in the southwest portion. Colder tonight as a general drift lowers temperatures. Governor to address Route 20 Association banquet

School Swept By Flames at Homewood Public School

Six alarms drew over twenty fire companies to the Homewood public school in Pittsburgh as flames erupted just before opening. Eight firefighters were overcome and a dozen more driven back by heavy smoke likely laced with chemical fumes. Fire spread to the third floor while crews fought the blaze with twelve water streams. J. L. Fife, who first sounded the alarm, was shocked and knocked from the sidewalk.

Six Initiated Into Y-Indus Club

Six new members joined the Y Indus Club at the Y M C A meeting. Richard Smith Robert Smith David Griffiths Robert Bearer Russell Dunford and Charles Boggs were welcomed. The group voted to support a local Elyria community campaign and discussed the feasibility of a six hour working day led by W Q McLellan.

Mathews Named Ohio Prohibition Chief After Sears Death

Edmund G. Mathews Elstin deputy state prohibition commissioner was named chief of the state prohibition department by Governor White to replace Clarence H. Sears who died October 26. Mathews, 86, a Democrat, has served as deputy since March 23 and was previously Lorain County sheriff. He plans no immediate changes and will study future steps before acting.

Camden Man 23 Hospitalized After Hunting Accident

Harry Papas of Camden, 23, is in Allen Hospital Oberlin in serious condition after a shotgun exploded at close range. The blast tore the mesh of his right shoulder as he and companions in a hunting party sat on a running board eating lunch when a gun hammer snagged on the car and discharged.

Shot From Hunters Run Grazes Neck Of School Boy

An eight shot from a hunter's gun entered a third grade room at Henrietta School nearly hitting John Gede in the neck. He was not injured but frightened. John is the son of Mr and Mrs Steve Gede of Edison Highway. Steve Gede, his older brother, was killed by a car years ago while alighting from a school bus.

Lindbergh Begins Long Flight Toward Miami and Jamaica

Col. Charles A. Lindbergh flew from Mitchell Field in a borrowed Army plane on the first leg of a southern venture. Hunters Find Body Of Man In Avon Township Home

Hunters from Cleveland discovered Prescott Hafer, 46, dead in his Avon Township residence. Coroner Dr. Thomas Peebles ruled acute alcoholism as the cause after viewing the scene with several liquor bottles nearby. Hafer likely died within 48 hours.
