Republic Steel Lorain plant cuts amid industry decline
Jaime Vigil of Republic Steel says the world economy will improve despite weak foreign trade policies and the auto crash. The Lorain plant, once home to 9,800 workers in 1971, shuttered its blast furnace in December 2008 and now operates with 373 staff. Republic Steel plans an $87 million Lorain expansion supported by tax breaks totaling about 25 thousand per job, including 4.6 million from the state and a 2.5 million water-use discount from Lorain. The company has plants in Canton, Massillon, Gary, Blaisdell, and Hamilton, Ontario, with about 1,900 employees overall.
