Enthusiasm soars as workers unite for a city drive now in its third day. A team captains a large effort with active participation across departments. Three more days remain for intensive collection and community support.
A 17 year old Elyria High student Russell Vincent fought off a robber on East Avenue near Eighth Street and kept his cornet case and watch. George M. Emerich was beaten robbed and tied to a fence on Oberlin Road near the B and O crossing. Emerich lost about 235 dollars while Vincent escaped with his instrument and watch. A third incident notes two men robbing and beating the victims after offering a ride. The report continues on page 2.
The county auditor released 1924 tax rates for 45 districts. State millage is 2.91, school purposes 2.65, adjusted compensation 0.26. county rate 2.9685, same as 1923. Slabbed figures show Amherst, Avon, Elyria, Columbia, Grafton, LaGrange, and other townships, with Amherst Village and South Amherst Village among higher levies.
City Council may decide on a 75 cent monthly service charge for Logan Gas Co. tonight. Gas committee report expected from G. A. Friday. The panel met Thursday with City solicitor D. W. Myers present. Friday will not reveal actions until the report is read. Most communities will start the charge after today, except two. The earliest filings took effect Nov. 15. Elyria’s opposition allegedly protected consumers.
Coroner Perry seeks Zahoski relatives after the farm laborer, also known as Louis Szabo, is found dead with a heavy jaw wound near River road and North Ridge road. No clues on cause. officials believe a heavy object struck him. body awaiting disposition. Informant says nephew in Avon and uncle in Michigan.
Governor Donaher told Elylia residents there is no fear of Logan Gas Co pressuring the city with a steep rate increase. He said the Public Utilities Commission would not discriminate against Elyria in approving charges. The governor’s letter was received by State Senator J. F. Burke, editor of The Chronicle.
Governor A Vic Donahey defends Columbus residents against a proposed service charge by the gas company. He argues no public body would approve discrimination against a city and warns against malfeasance if the rate is unfair.
Telegram rebukes Logan Gas Co for using fear to push an extra 75 cents monthly service fee. City Council faces a decision tonight on granting official permission for the charge, with continuation noted on page 2.
The Executive Committee releases a partial list of donors to the 1925 Elyria Community Chest Fund. The list shows donors including Columbia Steel Co., The Colson Co., Lorain County Savings & Trust Co., Elyria Lumber Co., The Elyria Hardware Co., and many individuals, with monthly and yearly pledge amounts. The publication will continue daily as names are prepared.
