Ohio bill would loosen fourth grade testing requirements

A proposed Ohio bill would shorten the fourth grade proficiency test and relax the reading pass requirement for promotion to fifth grade. It would stop requiring citizenship and science on the test, create a basic skills reading score, and require annual district ratings of academic effectiveness instead of every three years. The measure, sponsored by Sen. Robert Gardner, aims to align with a governor task force on proficiency tests and reflects ongoing debates about test pressure and student achievement.
