Ongoing reaction to WJW Channel 8s new hour news is mixed as Arbitron data for October show a drop in 6:30 viewership in week one, followed by a rebound that leaves second half hour audiences similar to those for The CBS Evening News after it moved to 7. The network news retains a smaller audience previously drawn by Entertainment Tonight and the first half hour remains uncertain.
TV editor Shannon Jewell reports Channel 8’s 6 to 6:30 newscast shows no significant change from last October's rating. Channel 8 backs the strong first-out score, with viewers returning after the initial week. In the three way race, Channel 3 remains behind Channel 8 and WEWS Channel 5 at 6 and 6:30, while Channel 5 preserves its 6 PM half hour.
ABC World News Tonight led the 6:30 slot for the second straight rating period while Channel 5 topped overall. Channel 3's Ron Bilek says no changes planned and expects the hour newscast to gain traction within a year or more despite ongoing low ratings and criticism.
John Darling reports Channel 3's AM Cleveland tied in ratings with Channel 5's Morning Exchange. Both air 9 to 16 and draw comparisons to past coverage praised or criticized by viewers and critics.
Channel 8 noon news draws a larger Cleveland audience than Channel 5. Wheel of Fortune on Channel 5 tops 7 pm ratings with 24 percent of households watching. Dan Rather on Channel 8 is seen by 9 percent, Tom Brokaw on Channel 3 by 5 percent. 11 pm figures skewed by post season baseball. Channel 8 leads Channel 5, with Channel 3 third. Channel 3’s Bilek denies plans to leave, says competition talk is common in the market.
